Our Brown Bag research talks and discussions are, as the name suggests, lunchtime sessions. The ongoing research work showcased in these sessions will give students and staff plenty of food for thought to munch on and discuss in a friendly, informal and cross-disciplinary environment. Come along and join in the discussion!

“We created a new memory culture”: Remembering the victims of right-wing terror in Hanau
Following the right-wing terror attack in Hanau on the 19th of February 2020, one of the survivors, Said Etris Hashemi, asserted in 2025 that “In Hanau, we created a new memory culture. Previously, the perpetrator was the focus. Now it is those who died”. This talk will take up this statement on memory culture in Hanau and look deeper into the existing memory culture around right-wing terror in Germany since the early 90s. Examining how those affected by the attack in Hanau have intentionally sought to change the memory culture surrounding the attack in the five years that have passed, some lessons might be learned for the future.
Lydia Maria Roth is a PhD candidate at the Handa Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence in the School of International Relations at the University of St. Andrews. Her research focuses on the remembrance of terrorism, with particular attention to victims of terrorism and practices of memorialisation
